VA Pain Care Act 2008 Becomes Law
On October 10, 2008, the Veterans' Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act of 2008 (S 2162), which includes the Veterans Pain Care Act 2008, became law when President Bush signed it.
The Veterans Pain Care Act directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to develop and implement a comprehensive policy on the management of pain experienced by veterans enrolled for VA health care services, as well as report on its policy annually through 2018.
Pain is a leading cause of disability among veterans. Many in our Armed Forces suffer from acute and chronic pain due to injuries in battle. Enactment of S 2162 is a long-sought victory for AAPM, for the health care coalitions in which it participates, for pain professionals everywhere, and for users of the military health care system who suffer from pain.
